The 10 Rules Of Vacation Dating
Markus | Posted 3/29/2009

1) Who Are You Travelling With?

Are you travelling alone or in a group? Both has its advantages and disadvantages. Let's take a closer look - Travelling alone seems frightening at first sight, but offers you more opportunities to meet people. You are forced to socialize and meet people, and it makes you more flexible in your planning.

Going with a group makes it easier to appear social and fun through social proof, but be aware that some groups tend to close their borders to new people so you want to be the one looking out to get to know new fun people!

2) Talk To Anyone!

A rule that can't be mentioned often enough is even more valid in holiday situations. When you're travelling alone you will be even more forced to do so!

3) Holiday isn't the real world

A holiday situation isn't everyday life. Everybody is in a different mood than at home, usually more relaxed and outgoing, but also be aware that in a holiday situation, things are moving faster due to the limited time available.

4) Be Interesting

Be a fun, outgoing person and make sure everyone will notice. You will get the center of attention automatically and this makes you interesting to the opposite sex!

5) Great Holiday Openers

Bring people to the moment they're in or want to be, and those who are not on holiday can be brought back to their nice memories!

I love to talk about the most basic things, like where someone is from. You can make things more fun by making guessing games and do some mind-reading (I am SURE you are from Country X because...).

Be observing and you will find hundreds of clues to form an opener - even at the airport. I saw a blonde girl that had a dive boat T-Shirt on and I looked at both her passport and baggage tag on her handbag. So I know already these things: She obviously dives (so do I), she is from Sweden and she travelled with Austrian Airlines through Vienna Airport (which I know very well). Furthermore I observe she is travelling alone. A dinner date was only a question of 3 minutes :)

Other cool topics are being curious and asking for advice.

6) Follow Up

Quick follow up is key to success - not only in business! People on holidays are overwhelmed with new impressions and new people they meet so make sure they remember you.

7) Go Over Your Limits

Holiday destinations are a perfect spot to practice that skill you always feared about doing at home. Here on the tropical island, nobody will know you after you leave. After all, people will find you interesting and you'll notice that the result will not be as bad as you imagined!

8) Learn The Local Language

This not only allows you to impress anyone you meet, but also opens ways to things you don't get if you are a 100% tourist. Get to know locals and greet them everytime you see them. There's NO better way to get social proof!!!

9) Remember Names

People get to know a lot of other people while travelling. Met in one second, forgotten in the other. Ask for the name of everybody you meet and greet them by the name on the next encounter. It will make a huge impression.

10) Use Repetitive Encounters

Say hi to a girl sitting by the pool briefly one day to stay under the radar. Maybe you catch up a tiny piece of free information (observations!). Use this to start a conversation on next day - it'll work for sure!

Holidays are the perfect spot to meet new people. If you use these 10 rules, you can't fail. If you do call me and I will personally kick your ass! :-)
