Nightlife in New York's Greenwich Village
Markus D | Posted 10/6/2009
On my last stay in New York City, we went out with a bunch of friends in the chic Greenwich Village area. Its a district with many old, low-rise buildings that have been renovated and form a very well-groomed neighbourhood, one of the most expensive ones in Manhattan, as I was told.
We started the evening in a rooftop lounge at the Gansevoort Hotel, having a couple of beers and enjoying the stunning view over the Westside Park and Hudson river.
We chose a special place for our dinner and went to STK restaurant, just across the street. It features nice interior design that reminds of Philippe Starck. Everything is trimmed to perfection here, including the stunning waitresses that look like fashion models. Probably they are.
In STK you have to eat Steak of course, grilled to perfection and accompanied by great side dishes such as the Parmesan Truffle Fries. They also have great fresh oysters.
After dinner, we tried a couple of other clubs in the area, but finally decided to cross the city to go to the lower East side, where we found plenty of cosy bars and lots of people hanging out. Thankfully, life is a bit more economical here and the places have a really relaxed atmosphere that reminds one of European bars. There is more dancing and party going on, and the air is all sweaty and hot (including the girls). Try for example 1st Street/1st Avenue and walk around a bit to find your perfect spot to spend the night.

Another highlight was our hotel lounge in The Royalton, where we had our room. Just entering the hotel you find yourself in one of the hottest lounges in town. Celebrity spotting is easy here, and after 7pm it may be difficult to get a table. Prices are quite high but well worth it - alone the Philippe Starck interiors must have cost a fortune! The Royalton is definitely one of the most beautiful and exclusive clubs I have seen so far.
